The Yankees had a chance to bury the Red Sox a little deeper in the American League East Friday night. Instead, the Bombers are the ones feeling like they're in a hole.
Boston's 6-3 win didn't knock the Bombers out of first place, but it marked the fourth loss in five games to open August, casting a cloud over Yankee stadium with three games remaining in the weekend wraparound series.
"We have to just play our game, not worry about what everyone else is doing," Nick Swisher said. "It hasn't been a good start to the month for us, so we have to turn it around."
Instead of dropping the Red Sox seven games back in the division, the Yankees' poor showing Friday night moved Boston within five games of first place and 4-1/2 of the wild card-leading Rays. The Yankees insist they didn't enter the weekend looking to put a huge dent in Boston's postseason hopes, but after winning the series opener, it doesn't look like the Red Sox will leave New York in any worse shape than they were in when they arrived.
