This wasn't exactly the plan the Yankees had to limit Phil Hughes' innings.
Hughes was roughed up Wednesday night in his shortest outing of the season, getting hammered by the Blue Jays, 6-3, to send the Bombers into Thursday's off-day stuck in a first-place tie with the Rays.
Hughes (15-6) allowed five runs on six hits and five walks over 3-2/3 innings, the first time in his 24 starts this season that he's failed to complete at least five frames.
"That's not the way I wanted it to happen," Joe Girardi said.
Vernon Wells had three of those hits, tripling in a run in the first inning before crushing a two-run homer to left in the third that staked Brett Cecil to a 4-0 lead.
Cecil (11-6) handled the Yankees with ease, holding them to two runs over eight innings, both coming on Marcus Thames' fourth-inning homer to left center. (Daily News)
