On a day when they lost the cleanup hitter to a bruised left ankle during batting practice, the Yankees begged CC Sabathia to pitch like the staff ace.
Two days after his wife delivered the couple’s fourth child, Sabathia survived the loss of Alex Rodriguez and a rocky beginning to hurl the Yankees to a much-needed 5-2 victory over the Red Sox in front of a sold-out Yankee Stadium crowd of 49,716.
“My fastball command was much better than the last couple of starts,” said Sabathia, who notched his 150th victory. “And the secondary stuff was better.”
The victory coupled with the second-place Rays losing hiked the Yankees’ AL East lead to 1 1/2 games. The Red Sox fell six lengths behind the Yankees.
Sabathia opened the day on a two-game losing streak thanks to a misbehaving sinker. Two innings into it, he appeared not to have solved the problems when Victor Martinez opened with a homer and Adrian Beltre and Mike Lowell followed with doubles and the Red Sox led 2-0. (NY Post)
