Andy Pettitte is hoping to be back in the rotation for the final weeks of September, giving him time to tune up for the postseason.
The way things are going, the Yankees may need him back just to get there.
A.J. Burnett was roughed up Friday night by the White Sox, who welcomed the Yankees to Chicago with a 9-4 beating. Burnett was charged with all nine runs (eight earned) in 3 1/3 innings, the fourth time this season that he's failed to get out of the fourth.
After Phil Hughes was hit hard in Toronto on Wednesday, Burnett followed with a clunker of his own. The White Sox tagged him for four runs in the first, then after the Yankees pulled within two runs in the third, Burnett allowed a run in the third and four more in the fourth until Joe Girardi mercifully ended his night.
