Yanks losing at Money Ball
Despite drawing more than four million fans, the Yankees lost between $50 million and $85 million for the 2005 season, several Major League Baseball sources told the Daily News. The benefactors of baseball, who pumped more than $200 million into their payroll and almost $110 million into revenue sharing and luxury tax, are deep in the red this year. "Yes, even George has his limits," one source said. And it may get worse.
According to lawyers close to the situation, the Yankees might have to share additional revenue with poorer clubs if a consultant hired by MLB decides they undervalued their television rights. The Yankees currently charge the YES Network about $60 million a year to broadcast games, but the consultant is expected to say the rights are worth far more. If he does, that will mean the Yankees will be required to make up the difference and put more money into the revenue-sharing fund. Continue

That's too bad. It's a shame that such a great empire is having to cut back a little on the ridiculous spending. That's not the baseball I've come to know and love in the last decade or so. I don't want to see anything about luxury taxes and profit sharing, I want excessive, even retarded spending on unproven pitchers with a solid year of winning baseball under their belts and $2 million contracts for 39 year old designated hitters. That's baseball, my friends, the way it was meant to be played, I mean paid. And the worst thing about it is the ones who will be hurt most by this whole thing are the fans. Did you see the ticket prices in this article? Wow! And it's only gonna get worse. Gone are the days when Larry Lunchpale could go with his family to see his beloved Bombers dominate. Now people in the Bronx can't even afford the tickets, right? Now it's Tristan Tribeca-Loft and his model girlfriend going because it's fashionable to be a Yankees fan. Sad. I'd say you guys deserve it, but no one deserves to be subjected to a stadium full of yuppies pretending to care. The whole thing almost makes you want to become a Mets fan, doesn't it? Ha ha ha. Just kidding. No one would be willing to do that. But it does make you think. With the Yankees having to cut back and the Mets upping the ante big time during the offseason, are we that far off from a time when the Mets are the draw in NYC? Can Yankees fans stomach the Mets. . .OUTSPENDING them??? That would be funny. That's a Subway Series I would be willing to watch - the Mets vs. the Yankees in a battle to outspend each other into mediocrity. And just so you don't think this is the biased ramblings of a hated Red Sox fan, you can bring the "Sox" along with you in your tumble from greatness. That way maybe a few other teams will have even a glimmer of hope to ever win a World Series. We'll see. But in the meantime, Good luck George. Have fun bilking the City for all it's worth.
